This is a photograph that Dorothy emailed me of Marvin on her lap. I was surprised at how big boned he is. He is a large, solid, red tabby cat. He was semi-feral (I think that is a fair description). DW invited him in to her life and home.

  2. What a lovely picture of Dorothy and Marvin, happy together. And Rembel and Murphy, lovely cats as well, and never forgetting Red, there’s something special about big chunky ginger cats.

  3. Dorothy, I think your house is sideways; but, I am familiar with the structure. Great! I have a very large wooden “box” housing and 2 smaller ones on my deck. I lined them with mylan blankets and use indoor/outdoor heating pads (all from Amazon) for warmth. Where does Marvin sleep at night?

      • I am happy to search endlessly for your comments. They are worth it. This morning I managed a shot of Shadow and Yellow, lounging on a cloud covered morning. You can see the canoe where they have made a second home. They especially like to hunker down in the canoe during the summer months. The shade of the old oak tree keeps them cool.

            • Hi Dee, hope you find this. Yes, Shadow is watchful..but I’ve been thinking about domestic cats lately and how much they are sometimes like their ancestors. In fact, Yellow is the protector of Shadow, yet she is submissive to him. If a Raccoon eats their food, she is the one up front and personal. If Marvin wanders into their territory, she is the one who puts herself in front of Shadow. Marvin won’t attack her, but he does do his little dance. She always grooms Shadow, and it is never reciprocated. She bravely comes to the door to get my attention if Shadow is hungry. She reminds me of a female lioness. Hunter and protector.

              • That is really amazing, DW.
                That she is the aggresser is very unusual. I love it! Good girl!
                She, truly, loves Shadow.
                There isn’t any other way to see it. He’s too old for her to see him as her offspring or a kitten needing nurturing,
                I don’t know how else we could explain it. She loves him, amd he loves being loved.
                Ofcourse, Marvin would want a piece of that.
                But, again, the more Marvin bonds with you, the less he’ll care.

            • Well, that is good to know. I’ll keep taking naps on the couch with Marvin snoring on my chest…well, on my whole body really. Maybe he will leave the others alone. When we are together, he follows me like a dog would. Gets tangled up in my legs sometimes. I have to be careful if I am cooking or washing dishes and he is in the house. He is always laying behind where I am standing. Out of sight, and very quiet. Barely touching my feet.

              Ill keep the bond strong. My sweet little macho cat.

            • Tell me about raccoons! I appreciate them, because they are the recycling geniuses of earth, as are the possums, but when they get into the cat feed, I go feral myself! You should hear me hiss at them. They do go running.

    • Marvin sleeps on the front porch which is covered. He has a bed with a heated pad behind a porch chair. I put pads and blankets around the legs of the chair to keep the breeze out. He only sleeps there in below 40 degrees. Anything warmer, he sleeps against the house in the opened air. I have a thermal pad out there, which he uses, but he also has four or five divots in the soil that he has made for himself. There are plenty of shrubs for cover.

      I’ll take a picture of his little eyesore sleeping spots later too.

  4. This is the handsome Murphy, one of the 15 cats abandoned next door to us 2 years ago, he first went to Kays Hill and then to Marion CP when she was helping rehome them all and then he got a wonderful home where he is still very happy.

  7. Great photo of Marvin and Dorothy! I wish I had somebody around to take pics of me with my cats. I only ever got about 3 or 4 of me and Red together – I wish I had more now.

    Marvin is a big boy isn’t he – I’d just love to give him a big cuddle.

          • You two are making me blush.

            That Rebel is a beauty. I thought he looked kind of like Red too. Marvin is quite the talker as well, Kylee. I’ve never heard so much babbling from a cat. About the only time he isn’t talking is when he is cuddling like in this picture. It is like he is saying “Sit down! Sit down! Sit down!” I usually obey.

            Note the big scratching post. He has finally learned to use it exclusively.

            • And, oh, to have window blinds! As you know, a must in CA and FL.
              I have to replace about every 6 months here.
              Everything is a play thing in my house. The noisier, the better.
              Blinds crashing to the floor and being mangled are like music!

            • That’s such a wonderful photo! Marvin is huge! It’s interesting that he vocalizes, since feral cats don’t usually meow much. He has learned how to boss humans, but he also retains his wild side and love of the outdoors. He was probably neutered later than Monty. Monty looks rather effeminate compared to Marvin, but Marvin is just a bigger cat too. An advantage for a feral cat, I would think.

      • It sounds wild and crazy (in a good way! )at your place Dee. There is nothing more pleasurable then having cats all around. That old Marvin has added so much to my world. He is a true character. Big personality.

        • Life is insane here, but it is exactly as I want it. Constant action.
          Some folks have a hard time getting ouside of themselves; I have a hard time finding a way to get inside myself. LOL!
          Do you know how old Marvin may be? You may have mentioned once, but I don’t remember. My guess would be aroung 9 or 10 y/o.

          • I think you are right on the money. Probably ten years old. He was one or two when he was TNR’d. There, I made a new verb. He was well into his Tom Cat-hood, and is still king of the realm. If he doesn’t get enough action, he harasses the two back yard cats, one of whom might be his sister, the other another old Tom, black as night named Shadow. Marvin puffs up like an super hero, chatters his teeth as a warning…I walk out there, and he meows like a baby, before his fur has a chance to go down. It is hilarious. He follows me like a dog, forgetting what he was so busy doing. I do hope there will be peace eventually. At least is isn’t a daily occurrence.

              • By the way, I also, tarp everything and tack or staple flaps over the openings that allow entrance/exit (like pieces of tarp) but stay in place.

              • I think Marvin was, also, neutered a little later than some and “remembers” what it was like to be fierce and hormonal. He, still, retains some of that fighting and dominance quality.

            • As I recall, Shadow and Marvin’s possible sister are friends. Marvin is a bit of the outsider. I’m sure he sees Shadow as an intruder. You are the answer. I think the closer Marvin becomes to you, the less he will care about Shadow. He will feel like the privileged one.

              • Right again Dee. You are very knowledgable about these charming animals. I’ve learned so much here at POC. Yes, Shadow and Yellow are ‘lovers’. Such a sight to behold. Together all day. They have separate heated beds. But always sleep together in the same one. Sometimes in the little house I set up for them. Sometimes on the one outside of the house. They lounge in the yard together, chase things together,frolicking and playful. Only eat together. I think Shadow assumes the property belongs to her, as he lets her chose which bowl and doesn’t start eating until she does. She is blond as ever, almost white. He is jet black with yellow eyes. They are something else. I will attempt to post a picture of their sleeping quarters. If they show upside down, I think Michael will fix it. It is covered with a tarp when it rains. You can see the heavy duty cord from the pad.

        • DW, I have corrected the alignment of your cat house image. It might take a while to come through because of a thing called “cache”. If you have a chance could you rephotograph your cat houses and tell us how they are used etc.? You do a very nice job of housing cats outside.

            I know this structure, and it is worth seeing.
            It can accomodate at least 8 cats comfortably.

            • I will get some good photos when the sun comes out. Sorry! Tis the season and all that. I feel like I’ve lost two days. The tarp I hang over the house provides two exits. This house comes with removable insulation. When I originally bought it, I wanted to put a second door in, but my handy man refused. Instead, I drilled large half-dollar sized holes as ‘peep’ holes so the cats could see what was coming. The other advantage is I can see through the holes with a flashlight. I don’t like disturbing the cats when they are in there for fear of they won’t come back. Neurotic fear I’m sure. The house is insulated now on three sides. The forth side I keep opened for my own peeping. I’ve noticed that Yellow sleeps in a more relaxed fashion with the insulation. Not so much in a tight ball.

  9. beautiful i got a cameo-orange red fluffy tabby called rembel hes alot like that, a big baby though doesnt stand up to the other cats.

    • Hi Kylee. Rembel is stupendous! Love him. Very cuddly. I should think he is great to stroke. I have removed the warm color cast in the picture. He is a more neutral version:

      • hes lovely to stroke his fur is very soft and silky. He was in his winter coat then so hes abit lighter. The day i picked him up he relexed when i picked him up and happily went into the cat cage to take him home. He didnt struggle at all. Although hes a pain around midnite till early morning hes a smoochy boy.
