The photo of this elderly woman has once again made the news in the world of what I call ‘cat satire,’ this time as an 83-year-old senior citizen who has trained her 65 cats to steal jewelry and other valuables from her neighbors. The article is floating around social media and I knew as soon as I saw the photo it’s not the first time this woman has gotten into trouble with the law. Michael reported on her for PoC on October 30, 2015. This gruesome story unfolded in Grand Haven, Michigan and the name used in that article was Marjorie Reynolds. At 91 years old, Ms. Reynolds was allegedly making purses out of stolen cats in her neighborhood.

I decided to throw the image in this article onto Google Images and tracked our lady back to an article from New York Daily News dated March 23, 2011, telling how love-starved 92-year-old Helen Staudinger in Marion County, Florida went over to neighbor Dwight Bettner’s house on Monday and refused to leave without a kiss.

Helen returned home and came back carrying a .380 semiautomatic pistol and fired four shots at Bettner’s house. Bettner, a former police officer, said Helen had gotten jealous on a previous occasion and tried to strangle a woman she thought he was dating.

Charges of assault and shooting a deadly weapon were made against Helen. I’m not sure of the outcome of that case. The article from 2011 tells us Helen has been a widow since 1982 and she has 5 children.

The most recent news on Helen (if that is her real name), not counting the cat burglar article, is her death on June 26, 2017, where her age is given as 99 and her last residence as Salt Springs.

There are several references to Helen shooting off her gun after being denied a kiss and may or may not be true. The cat stories, not so reliable. One source goes to another source and it sounds like an interesting case and is posted on multiple sites. It stirs things up a bit and gains a few new readers.

If you don’t trust the source of a story and the story has a photo, it’s very simple to right click and save the photo and drag the photo to “Google Images.” This little trick also works well to identify romantic scammers.
