This is an outstanding permed cat coat, aka a curly coat. I say ‘permed’ because the only cat I know which has a permed coat like this is the rare LaPerm although the Cornish Rex is somewhat similar (wavy). The LaPerm is a purebred cat created in America. I don’t know if this kitten is a genuine LaPerm. She might not be but it seems likely that she has the same genes that create the permed coat of the LaPerm. In early 1996 it was estimated that there were 60 cats of this breed in existence.
LaPerm
I will take this opportunity to say a few words about the LaPerm purebred cat. As mentioned, it is a curly-coated breed from the USA. The picture shows a short haired example with an Afro look while in long-haired versions the coat forms very tight ringlets. Another name is the Alpaca Cat.
The foundation cat for this breed was found by Linda Koehl in The Dalles, Oregon, in 1986 and it was accepted by TICA in September 1995 with all colors allowed. They are described as very affectionate and easy-going.
I have a full page on this cat breed which you can read by clicking on this link.
