This is a page of pictures of Persian cats and some information about this ever popular cat breed. The breed is both praised and criticised. Praised for its charms and criticised for its inbuilt health issues due to extreme selective breeding in the modern flat-faced variant. I think the breed has lost out because of the attitude of the US cat associations in continuing to support this extreme version. The Maine Coon has perhaps ovetaken the Persian in popularity.

Introduction
This page is, as the title suggests, about pictures of Persians. This page is quite long so scroll down please. I have created a gallery. The pics are linked to attachment pages.
The Persian Cat – Origins
Perhaps the first thing to note is that most of the pictures on this page are of “ultra” or extreme Persians. You can read about the transition from Doll Face Persian to Ultra Persian by clicking on this link (opens in a new window). This link takes you to the history (opens in a new window) of the breeding programme over the past 40 years or so..
..and this is an interesting new page at May 2012 – a comparison between a 1901 Persian in the UK and a 2009 Persian in the USA.
This highly developed Persian cat is now considered the Persian Cat by the cat fancy, except by people involved in the traditional cat. The first link above presents the results of a poll conducted on this site showing that a majority of people seem to prefer the Traditional or Doll Face Persian cat (this link opens in a new window and is an article written in memory of Yeri a superb, white Traditional Persian Cat). I have revisited my pet subject and built another page on the Traditional Doll Face Persian cat which incorporates a fantastic large format slide show of all the pictures of Persian cats that I have (including the ones here, but lots more) and a discussion on whether the breed standards of the major cat associations allow, at least theoretically, judges to let a traditional Persian cat win a competition.
Health
We know there are health issues in breeding to an extreme level. The obvious problem is tear duct overflow due to the altered channeling of the tear ducts in breeding a flat face. This caused the tears to overflow down the face causing staining, which requires repeated cleaning. Read more on health by clicking here (opens in a new window).
Care
A certain degree of specialist care is required in looking after cat as shown on this page. Perhaps that is obvious. I have written an article, briefly discussing the care requirements (opens in a new window). You can see more pictures and another slide show as well.

Top 3 listed catteries in Google search (plus a special cattery) – 2008 – things change. I’ll update this in due course.
Ultra:
- Rocky Mountain Persians – Located in Loveland, Colorado, USA. This is a really good website (one of the best cattery websites that I have seen) and it is listed high on a Google search, which is unusual for a non-directory site. All good indications I believe.
- Pelaqita Persians – Located Pleasantville, OH, USA. Quality site – good indicator.
Doll Face:
- Boutique Kittens – Located Colorado, USA. Breed Himalayans, Napoleon (dwarf cat – Munchkin, Persian Group hybrid), Munchkins (founding dwarf cat) and Ragpapers (all links open in a new window).

BREED STANDARD: What do breeders follow and can the Traditional Doll Face Persian cat win in competition?
See an illustrated CFA Persian cat breed standard. I am critical of the standard.
MOST EXPENSIVE: The best lineage makes for the most expensive. It seems that “cameos” (shell and shaded – see CFA definition of this color) are one of the rarest colors with white and black.
GIVING UP: Having bought a Persian cat some people give him/her up to a shelter because of UTIs (Urinary Tract Infections – vets bills I guess), coat maintenance and breathing problems (for the Ultra Persian)
RE-HOMING: In 2006 there were almost 900 Persian cats waiting to be adopted on Petfinder.com. Go to Persian cat rescue UK.
GOING TO THE TOILET:An experienced rescue center manager in the UK says that one in three Persians messes in inappropriate places in the home. This is the most common behavioral problem in Persian cats for this shelter. Persian cats are especially sensitive and nervous. When they are upset they will very often develop a problem of inappropriate urination or defecation and will go anywhere in the home. See Cat behavior.
This can lead to the cat being taken to a shelter and sometimes being put to sleep. Yes, hard to believe. Sometimes (and perhaps understandably) the owner becomes frustrated and frightens the cat more exacerbating the problem. The answer is to de-stress your cat. Persians like company and a gentle environment. Your vet may have ideas on de-stressing and I have heard of using human rescue remedy in small doses but check with your vet first.
This rescue center manager recommends a product called “Training Pads”. These are absorbent pads that have an attractant. Your Persian will go to the pad when the urge comes and their use can encourage your Persian to use the litter tray. They are available in the UK and US.
HYPO-ALLERGENIC: Himalayans (Himmies), which are a Persian with color points are not hypo-allergenic as some believe. And this includes white Himmies. Apparently Siberians and Russian/British Blue are less prone to cause allergic reactions.
PERSIAN SHEDDING FUR A LOT: This could be normal; for example, molting in a hotter climate or due to diet. Brushing and combing will help to reduce the amount of loose hair. If the problem is severe and continuous see a vet, obviously. Persians do produce a lot of fur normally as they have a lot to shed.
EYE GOOoooo: This is more prevalent in Persian cats due selectively breeding the facial appearance (ultra face). You can tell by the quantity and demeanor of the cat if is a medical problem or just happening normally (Persian cat health problems). If it is normal, deal with it normally by for example wiping it off daily (regular cleaning is important).You might also consider commercially available wipes from a pet products supplier (Petsmart). The wipes would appear to also help remove the tear staining due to tear overflow (excessive tear flow and poorer drainage due to skull shape).
