Place uneaten wet cat food outside to encourage finishing it

A little tip that I employed today for my indoor/outdoor cat to which this applies (obviously).

Like a lot of cats, mine sometimes leaves wet food in the bowl uneaten. Or he’ll ask for food and not eat it.

If this happens in the early morning, I place the bowl outside in the backyard at about 4 pm on the lawn!

This almost always results in him eating it as he thinks that he has discovered some food – effectively a dead animal and when domestic cats eat wet cat food they are going against the grain and scavenging.

The wildcat ancestor of the domestic cat is not a natural born scavenger. But it happens as is clear in this instance.

There appears to be a natural, survival instinct to eat food left lying around. And the fact that it is not fresh does not bother my cat. In fact, he sometimes prefers wet food that has been down for several hours. I think that it smells more and it is this which is attractive.

The objective of this exercise? To minimise wet food waste to a tiny proportion of the wet food provided.

If there is anything left at the end of the day (very little for me I am pleased to say), I give it to the wild animals.

Crows, pigeons and magpies eat wet cat food as do foxes.

You’ll just have to make sure a neighbour does not object. Some people think that placing cat food down attracts wild ‘vermin’!

Well, it does. Looking at it from a difference perspective, we have a duty to protect wildlife as humans are destroying the planet.

That’s it. Nothing more to say. And no pics either. Correction: I added a pic from the media libray.
