‘Which POC commandment number should we make? Support only small, local, or individual charities? Right under #1? Thou shalt not declaw?’

Thousands of years ago cats agreed to become domesticated. In those days it was a case of give and take, cats helped to keep the rodent population under control and in return they received a home, food and protection.

But now too many cats have to give more than they take, sadly some are not treated with the love and care and respect they deserve and some have to pay for their home by having their very essential claws taken from them.

Here are Ten Commandments which should have been written in stone at the time when cats lives started being in the control of human beings.

They are in no particular order:

  1. Thou shalt care for thy cat all of his days.
  2. Thou shalt provide veterinary treatment for thy cat whenever he needs it.
  3. Thou shalt feed thy cat with the best food thou can afford.
  4. Thou shalt never punish thy cat.
  5. Thou shalt never have thy cat declawed.
  6. Thou shalt never let anyone treat thy cat as a second class citizen to a dog.
  7. Thou shalt respect thy cat needs his own space and privacy at times.
  8. Thou shalt provide thy cat with a warm bed to sleep in.
  9. Thou shalt not ignore thy cat when he wants thy attention.
  10. Thou shalt only support small cat rescues where all donations are spent on the cats.

Maybe someone can think of many more commandments, but those are my top ten for PoC.

im definitly going to print this out if i can put it in a frame so when people come to visit thy rules will plain to see. i just love it.

    • Barbara says:

That’s a good idea Kylee, these “rules” are normal to POCers aren’t they but some people will be surprised to read them and might never have thought, or would think, of them for themselves.

Love the poster Ruth you did it again!!! Lol I couldn’t think of a better 10 cat commandments each one just as fitting as the next

    • Ruth aka Kattaddorra says:

Thanks Leah. There are more than ten now that Michael has thought of another two, but who ever heard of twelve commandments lol

  3. Barbara says:

Thou shalt not keep thy packet of crisps to thyself but should share it with thy greedy boys, likewise thy strawberry yogurt and the butter from thy toast. Seriously though sis another brilliant one, I know you gave a lot of the thought to the commandments and worked hard on the poster even though you enjoyed every minute of it, I would also like to second Michael’s request for you not to fall from your twig for a l-o-n-g time!:-)

  4. DW says:

Well done! The list should be handed out at adoption centers world wide.

    • Ruth aka Kattaddorra says:

Thanks Dorothy, I’ve always said anyone should have to pass a competence test before being allowed to adopt a cat, but that’s never going to happen is it! 🙁

      • Michael says:

It is odd that you don’t even have to pass a competency test before you bring a child into the world. That should be a requirement.

I can’t see why there can’t be a couple of lessons at school for kids about animal husbandry of pet caretaking – call it what you like. They get sex education. Caring for a cat or dog is as important as sex 😉 More important actually!

  5. Dee (Florida) says:

And, the pursuit of justice for all cats will prevail at POC!
    Poster perfect, Ruth AKA.

  6. kylee says:

i love it soo much, so true.

  7. Ruth aka Kattaddorra were you or are you a “Copywriter” by profession ? I like your witty and hilarious posters with a strong social “Cat Message” ? We all cat owners should try to maintain our pet cats to the best of our economic conditions.Sadly, life is not equal to all of us humans and the same applies to our domesticated pet, the common cat. Some cats are lucky to have good human owners while others are unlucky.

Hello Rudolph I’m a retired vet nurse and have had cats in my life for almost 40 years now and volunteered with them (amongst other animals) for 48 years, yes it makes me getting on in years sadly and I can’t do as much physically as I could when younger.
So I do a lot of animal welfare on line, trying to educate, especially about the cruelty of declawing cats.
I’ve been writing and designing posters for PoC for around 5 years now and LOVE doing it.
I just wait for an idea to come, or see a comment that inspires me, then think about it overnight, choose graphics from my set of CDs, make the poster, then write the article and that’s it 🙂

      • Marc says:

Great poster Ruth – I will put it on my facebook wall with your permission(?) I really like it. I love the rows of cats at the top with their tails up lol.

One thing – a subsection of number 3 – thou shalt not only give thy cat dry food to graze off and nothing else. This is the biggest and most common sin in my view.

I would say 7 out of 10 cat caretakers believe it’s fine to leave nothing but a bowl of dry and occasionally change the scummy water in the bowl. Maybe even 8 out of 10. I don’t believe this is an exaggeration.

        • Ruth aka Kattaddorra says:

Thanks Marc, yes of course you can put it on your wall, I love to see my posters being used.
Yes ten cats along the top signify the ten commandments 😉
You are so right about dry food! Sometimes people are just ignorant, sometimes lazy, sometimes don’t care, we can just keep on trying to make cats lives better can’t we!

        • Barbara says:

Too true Marc, some people think filling a bowl with dry food every few days is acceptable, I wonder how they’d enjoy stale food at every meal.

      • Michael says:

        Ruth…

thou shalt continue to design cat posters for PoC for all thy remaining days 😉

Great poster. It is a variation on the Cat Welfare Act 2006.

        What about:

        • Thou shalt not kill a cat unless for humane reasons
        • Thou shalt keep your cat safe
      • Excellent designing and keep up the work as age is just a physical number..Thanks to the internet, the World has become a smaller and easier place to communicate thoughts and ideas.

  8. Elisa says:

Sealy is REALLY taking advantage of me with #9 🙂

    • kylee says:

my rebel does that esp late at night

      • Ruth aka Kattaddorra says:

Walter and Jozef like our attention most early mornings, I get poked out of my bed by Jo many a day lol
They are both in bed now, they’ve done their rounds and filled their tummies, they will get up just before 2 when Babz is due home from work.

    • Ruth aka Kattaddorra says:

Walter and Jozef are experts at making us keep that commandment lol
