So….your cat was intelligent enough to make it to the top of a 75-foot tree but isn’t smart enough to make it’s way back down. Now what? When you’ve called the fire department and another service (who charged even though they failed to help), what do you do then? If you live in North Carolina, you can call a professional cat rescuer. In this case, it’s Patrick Brandt.
Patrick is owner and rescue extraordinaire of RescueMyCat.org, based in Mebane, North Carolina, where he performs rescues in Durham, Orange, and Alamance counties of cats, birds, and other pets, expensive toys such as model airplanes, drones, rockets, helicopters, etc. Patrick is willing to travel to neighboring North Carolina counties as well. He’s on call with Durham, Orange and Alamance County Animal Control Divisions.
I learned of Patrick last week when a plea went out from a cat lady named Brandy who has a Facebook page called My Stray and Feral Babies sent out a plea after her cat Blackie climbed 75 feet up a tree and refused to come down. It was cold, it was wet, and Blackie was facing death from the elements or from the eventual fall that would eventually come. Brandy was low on funds, but Patrick didn’t let that stand in his way of saving her precious kitty. He even posts on his website
“Phone consultations are always welcome so give me a call if your cat is stuck in a tree and you’re not sure what to do. If you decide a rescue is needed, I appreciate a donation to help cover my gas, time, and gear costs. However, thanks to our donors, I have never turned away someone in need because of an inability to pay.”
What a kindhearted and amazing guy! This is a man who knows how to rescue without harming your pet or your tree. He uses safe, OSHA-approved, professional tree climbing practices that won’t harm your tree. Patrick never uses climbing spikes because they can introduce insect and fungal diseases into an otherwise healthy tree.
When he’s not climbing tall trees, Patrick is a dad with three kids, a wonderful wife, and two indoor cats – Snowy and Heber. Most of his family also likes swinging and climbing in the trees with him. His day job is in higher education administration. Patrick loves being outside in nature and he has a special place in his heart for animals – especially ones in distress.
RescueMyCat can be found on Facebook as well as on his website, where donations are appreciated. Patrick also offers an abundance of advice on his site as to what to do should your cat find itself in a bind.
Brandy could also use some assistance with her ferals, as she has a young son she cares for alone. Blackie says send Amazon Wishlist items to help him recover from his tree climbing ordeal. He’s eating great and he and his family are resting up after this frightening experience.
And Patrick, you ARE a hero!

Awesome young man!
I’ve been following Brandy’s page for several months. She is a wonderful woman who cares deeply about her son and the cats. She is having a hard time right now and would be so appreciative of any assistance. Please visit her Amazon page and help her have a Merry Christmas!
I’ll bet she’s still a nervous wreck over this. I had a cat up a tree for 4 days back in the early 1990’s and I talked a roofing company employee into saving her.
Good guy! A real hero. I’ve climbed a couple trees to get a cat down but maybe only 10-12 ft. Those trees are like sky scrapers! I respect Patricks’ skill and passion for that. Wish there was a video of this.
I’m surprised he even took a photo mid-rescue 🙂
The photo is a screen shot from the helmet cam footage we are making into a video. Thank you! -Patrick
He has zero fear of heights just like cats. I hate heights. As I have got older my fear of heights has got worse.
When I first read of Blackberry being stuck in the tree I commented that whoever rescued the cat would get a story written about this.
Stupid autocorrect. Blackie 😀
There is a video in the works. I will post the link here soon. Thank you! -Patrick
If you upload it to YouTube I can post it right into the body of the article 🙂 Just PM me on Facebook with the link and I’ll add it.
This guy is amazing and what a great idea and service he provides. Blackie was so high up I doubt anyone else would have attempted it. Fantastic. I think this is the highest I have seen a cat when stuck up a tree.
