I just heard this on the BBC News. Theo Bronkhorst is a land owner and professional hunter. He helped the American dentist Walter Palmer to kill Cecil the lion. In fact, he’s the person who finished off Cecil 40 hours after Dr Palmer had speared him with an narrow but failed to kill him.
Theo Bronkhorst says that the case against him is frivolous and unjustified. His lawyer argued for a delay in his trial which has now been postponed to September 28, 2015 so that they can prepare his case. If he is convicted he faces up to 15 years in prison.
He believes that he had done nothing wrong and says that:
“hunting is an integral part of our country and it’s got to continue and if we do not use wildlife sustainably, there will be no wildlife.”
The good part about this news is that it demonstrates commitment on the part of the Zimbabwean authorities. There are negotiations with America as to how best to proceed with respect to Walter Palmer and as to whether extradition is necessary which is a last resort for the Americans.
Zimbabwean officials say the killing of the line was not approved and as you know a Cabinet minister has stated firmly that Palmer should be extradited for trial in Zimbabwe.
