Pussyhat – Reappropriating the word ‘pussy’ in a positive way

I have to write a short note on this protest project because (a) I am sympathetic to the protestors and (b) cats are indirectly involved.

This is a protest by women against President Trump. There are quite a few anti-Trump protests going on at the moment and not all of them are in America. There was one in London yesterday and they were well attended.

We can remember the arrogant mysogonistic words Trump used in describing how he could get away with groping women because of his celebrity status. He said it years ago to a television presenter whose name I have forgotten (I recall that he lost his job).

Two women are behind the Pussyhat project: Krista Suh and Janya Zweiman. The idea is that you knit a large, pink, wooly hat with cat ears.

The objective is to highlight the word “pussy” as employed by Trump and reclaim it and to use it in a more acceptable and respectful way.

The hat is a straightforward design allowing beginners to knit and join in. Participants also knitted the hats for others to wear at the march.

The ladies wore the Pussyhats during the Women’s March on Washington on Saturday, January 21, 2017 (yesterday). The concept was to create a “sea of pink” at the march.

The ladies did a fine job in promoting their project. It was launched the day following Thanksgiving. They used social media to maximum effect
