Siamese cat declawed on all four paws AND detoothed

Mishka was two years old when his owner had him declawed on all four paws and at the same time his teeth were removed. We are told that he had his teeth removed because he was ‘chewing on baseboards and things’. Good reason right!?

He is now four years of age and was relinquished to the Williamson County Animal Shelter because his owner was in poor health and could no longer care for him. Of course, he wasn’t actually caring for him in the first place because he had him unnecessarily abused by a “professionally qualified” veterinarian who was in total breach of his sacred oath to only act in the interests of his patient’s health and welfare.

Fortunately, Mishka has been adopted from the shelter. I hope he is alright and finds happiness and has no pain.

New York state Bill banning declawing

In an associated story I’m told that the bill passing through the New York State legislature has failed. This bill has been running through the legislature for a long time and it appears that the veterinarians have had their day in arguing that a ban is unnecessary because they need to make the decisions about how to treat their patients.

Sadly, most veterinarians do not advise their clients properly about exactly what declawing entails and neither do they make decisions in the best interests of their patients when it comes to declawing. Therefore a ban is necessary but unfortunately the politicians did not have the strength of character nor the morality to follow through on their intentions to ban this controversial and almost universally unnecessary procedure.

This is an unconfirmed report because I cannot find confirmation of it on the New York State Assembly website. The bill is recorded on the webpage but it’s progress to a situation in which it has been abandoned is not recorded on the website.

If it is true, it is a sad day. America needs one state to have the courage to ban declawing. At present there are 8 cities where it is banned. In Canada a ban is snowballing across the country and I hope that the whole of Canada will be free of this legalised cat abuse in the not too distant future.

  1. I am the owner of this precious cat! I am so happy I came upon this, I have renamed him milo. He is the most loveable cat and has another Siamese brother! He is so happy! He is the best cat I’ve ever had.

  2. I have run out of cusses.

    Poor Mishka.

I hope Mishka’s new family will be able to provide the supportive care that will be needed in the coming years.

A lousy, miserable life of extreme misfortune is befitting any veterinarian who performs elective declaw/detoothing. Those who commission such malicious mutilation for their cats, have no excuse for such ignorance.

A global ban is needed more than ever, for all such brutal mutilations.

    • Yes, I also can’t think of enough cusses to express my anger at both the vet and owner. To abandon this poor thing after doing this to her is the most extreme insult to injury example I can think of. Poor Mishka. No excuse whatsoever for any of it, and yes the laws must change.
