Stevie the Fabulous Blind Wonder Cat: From living on the streets to becoming a forever family member

March 30, 2017     By Cindy Lester

I’m going to tell you about one of my cats, Stevie, our beautiful blind kitty. Stevie’s story started with me on March 25, 2013, in southern Missouri. I happened to look out my window and saw a tabby cat in my yard.

My neighborhood doesn’t have a lot of stray cats so I went outside to see if he had a collar and ID. Once I got close to him I could tell he had visual problems because he kept running into things in my yard. Stevie managed to get away from me but I couldn’t get him out of my mind. A blind cat shouldn’t be roaming the streets.

I looked for three more days then saw him sitting in the front yard of a neighbor. I quietly snuck up on him and threw a blanket over him and he came home with me. I already had three cats and had no intention of keeping him. I took him to my vet and he was diagnosed with total blindness but healthy otherwise. I got a well known local animal sanctuary to agree to accept him but had to wait three weeks.

Literally, the night before we were to make the 75-mile drive to take him I changed my mind and Stevie Wonder became one of the family. About a year later the sanctuary he was supposed to go to was shut down for numerous violations including sick and dying cats. I was so glad I decided to keep him.

I made Stevie a Facebook page and Stevie the Fabulous Blind Wonder Kitty now has over 4000 followers and a local online publication featured him as a “feel good” article last year. Stevie is an amazing cat that can do everything my other cats do. He also gets along very well with our 70-pound dog. A few minor changes as to where we put things in the house are all we ever had to do. If given the chance, I will gladly take in other blind cats.
