Brazil’s Island of the Cats is an embarrassment to the country. It is a small island about 500 m x 400 m covered in jungle off the Brazilian coast about 300 km east of Rio de Janeiro. People have been abandoning domestic cats there and they have procreated to the point where it is becoming impossible to continue to feed and water them. The coronavirus pandemic has stopped people going out to the island and it has put a brake on TNR programs. Therefore, they are increasing in numbers and people can no longer brush the problem under the carpet in the interests of animal welfare.
