Stray Cat Chooses Her Human Guardian While He Slept

The ‘experts’ repeat that a cat chooses her/his human companion and the public ask how does it happen? Well, here is a classic and fairly dramatic example. It is not news and it was widely published on the internet although I have only today come across the story. It was first published on The Dodo on 3rd Jan 2019. If it is new to you, I hope you enjoy it.

It took place in Canberra, Australia. A guy, Ali Safa, was chilling out on the balcony of his home and fell asleep. While snoozing a dirty, vulnerable little white cat clambered onto Safa’s stomach and settled down for a snooze herself.

When Safa woke up there she was, his cat companion purring contentedly on his stomach.

Safa’s heart softened. I don’t think he was thinking about adopting a cat and he’d seen plenty of strays where he lives. But this cat’s tender and confident appearance changed his mind.

When his new found cat companion (she’s female) woke up she started to make demands for food and rightly so. She must have been starving. She meowed non-stop for 20 seconds, Safa said. He gave her chicken wings prepared by his mother earlier!

Safa named her Angel. She was checked out by a local vet and found to be healthy, which is a blessing. She had no identification and so Angel had inveigled her way into the heart of her new human guardian. This is the way it should have been from the beginning.

Safa bought toys and food and their journey together began in earnest.

Angel is a fun cat, Safa says. She is still young by the look of it and will play a lot and behave like a young cat.

Angel showed Safa how cats can choose their human carer/companion. Not all cats have the courage or character to do this. Angel showed a lot of character to jump up and rest on Safa’s stomach. She was very trusting. How did she know she’d be safe?

Perhaps she didn’t. She was just desperate. Perhaps her hunger overcame her fear. But then again cats do a have a sixth sense in being able to tell if someone is safe or dangerous.

I wonder is she was socialised because her behaviour indicates it. She was a stray cat but may have come from a neighbouring home; the product of irresponsible cat ownership and unregulated, ad hoc cat breeding. I don’t know. What’s clear is that Angel is gutsy little lady and has been rewarded with a a guardian hopefully for the rest of her life.
