A stray kitten found frozen to a Kentucky boat dock has found a new home after being rescued by Mercer County Sheriff Ernie Kelty.
This story begins after Roy and Laurie Jasper saw the kitten, now named Ernie, through their surveillance camera. Ernie had fallen into the water and managed to get out. Ernie showed up again 11 hours later and the Jasper’s could see he was frozen to the left of the steps. Since they were unable to help, the sheriff was notified.
Roy Jasper said in an interview with Lex18 News
“He had fell in the water and came upon the little piece of rock, just left of the steps and froze right there.”
Sheriff Kelty poured water on the front feet of the kitten (which is a no-no but thankfully did no harm) and had to cut away fur that was frozen to the dock.
The Jasper’s took the wet kitten inside and wiped him down with towels. Ernie now has a forever home with the family and is lucky to have survived. Many animals aren’t as fortunate. They freeze before help arrives or after being rescued.
“I think he was wonderful that he dropped everything he did just to come down here and rescue one little kitten,” Roy added.
