Sympathy for Feral Cats

Sympathy for Feral Cats

by Max Doster
(Georgia)

I do my absolute best to feed and supply shelter from harm when it comes to feral cats.

A mother cat recently had 6 kittens but sadly, before I had the chance to bring them in to safety, 5 of them had vanished.

One little gray kitty had made it, but just the other day, I noticed that it wasn’t with mommy.

I’m afraid that it also has fallen prey to either other territorial cats, falcons, or canines.

It breaks my heart to see any animal suffer, especially baby ones, and I’m really hurt that little Graysie, as I called her, is probably dead.

Feb 22, 2011 Update!!!
by: Anonymous

It’s been a while since my first comment, and of course I have a couple of updates. Sadly, the 5 kittens that I spoke of earlier did in fact perish, though I don’t know how or what happened. Little “Graysie” did pop up again a few days later and is now 7 mos. old!!! Mommy is doing well, but before I could get her in to be spayed, she became pregnant and looks to be giving birth really soon. I put Graysie in my garage when it was too cold, or if it rained for more than a couple days, while mommy (Dumplins)made a nice cozy hideaway under my covered grill. I used hot-hands to keep them a little warmer on these cold Ga. nights, especially during the snow storm. I’m looking to get Graysie spayed asap, and when Dumplins has her babies, I won’t hesitate in getting her in to be “fixed” as well. Thank you so much for all your nice words.

I’m so sorry to hear about your babies. I foster cats and I’ve never yet seen a mom that hasn’t been a great mom. Its hard enough to devote all you time to make sure your kittens get through kittenhood without scavenging for your next meal or worrying about predators. I hate it that cats are 2nd class citizens in America and that humans are to blame. All every cat wants is food, warmth and safety AND I DON’T THINK THAT IS EVER TOO MUCH TO ASK.

Thank god Max that there are people like you who care. I hope with all my heart that your mom and little ones are safe. Take care.

Max are you sure the mother cat hasn’t moved her kittens ? When doing feral TNR we found that used to happen a lot. As soon as she realised we knew which area they were she would move her litter somewhere else before we could trap them. It took us weeks to find one litter, the mother moved them every night until they grew too big for her to carry.Although they don’t normally only move some of the kittens and leave one.
I’m so sad for you, I wish more people were as kind.

I’ve taken care of ferals for years. It’s always so hard when you lose one and don’t know for sure what happened to it. Just take care of mama kitty. She still needs you. I live in Hodges, SC near Greenwood.

Hi Max, I agree it is sad and this goes on day in day out every year. Nothing really changes except for the efforts of people like yourself.

Thanks for sharing. Keep up the good work, please.
