Sarah Hartwell on her messybeast.com website says that the classic genetic mutation causing the sparseness in fur, as described in literature written by veterinarians, is associated with short guard hairs, an unsightly brown “exudate” and skin problems. That does not sound very attractive. I do not know, at this stage what sort of other health issues might be associated with the gene which causes this thinning of the hair. Very often you will find that genetic mutations have more than one effect upon the cat so it it isn’t just their fur which is altered.
