The cage size of laboratory cats will shock you

The cat that you see in the picture is in a cage which is, on my reckoning, is considerably larger than the requirements as specified by the National Research Council in America. That body states that the floor area of a cat’s cage in a laboratory for animal testing should be 0.37 m² at least. And the height of the cage should be a little over half a metre which I find astonishingly small.

However, there is no doubt that they provide cages which are larger than this. If not it would be appalling. But I hope they do. The requirements in Europe are better with the cage size being significantly larger. Sometimes laboratory cats are held about two years. So can you imagine what it must be like for a cat to be in such a cage for about two years? It really is piling indignity upon cruelty and the research companies and the large businesses which funds them should be ashamed of themselves.
