Top Poisonings in Cats

A list of top cat poisonings per the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 2008. Note: it not for the use of sh*tty cat poisoners but cat caretakers to inform them of where the most common poisons for cats are. To be forewarned is to be forearmed and I hope it helps prevent some accidental poisonings.

They are listed in descending order of occurrence:

Permethrin insecticides for dogs. Yes, this is unsurprising but still extraordinary that cat owners are careless enough to use dog insecticides on cats which can kill them. Never use a dog flea and tick treatment on a cat.

The second most common cat poisoning also concerns insecticides; this time topical insecticides (ones you put on the skin). Cat owners are not following the directions. It is vital to follow the directions because failure to do so can harm and kill a cat.

Venlafaxine — brand name Effexor

Cats are attracted to an antidepressant for humans called Venlafaxine (brand name Effexor). This means that they might eat a capsule that is lying around. Beware.

Glow jewellery and sticks are mildly toxic to cats.

Lilies. We know or should know about this one. Even the pollen can be extremely harmful to cats. It can lead to kidney failure. Even a bee carrying lily pollen can kill a cat. Yes, this is toxic stuff for a cat.

Liquid potpourri. Cats can lick it and lick it off their paws having stepped in it.

Anti-inflammatory nonsteroidal, drugs such as aspirin and ibuprofen.

One tablet of Tylenol (acetaminophen) can be fatal to a cat.

Rodenticides (anticoagulants) can kill a cat if the cat eats a rodent killed by the poison.

Amphetamines – small doses can cause serious ill-health.

Associated: moth balls and antifreeze. See also toxic to cats.

Hi, I am 70-years-of-age at 2019. For 14 years before I retired at 57, I worked as a solicitor in general law specialising in family law. Before that I worked in a number of different jobs including professional photography. I have a longstanding girlfriend, Michelle. We like to walk in Richmond Park which is near my home because I love nature and the landscape (as well as cats and all animals).
