There 741 million people in the EU and 74.4 million cats. This contrasts with the USA which has 331,002,651 people and 94 million cats. Therefore there are far more cats per person in the USA than in the EU making the US the leading domestic cat nation.
In the EU, about 26% of EU households own at least one cat whereas in the USA the percentage is significantly higher as shown in the table below (Source: American Pet Products Association’s 2019-2020 National Pet Owners Survey):
