This 1913 photograph is interesting because two of the men are carrying domestic cat companions. Nowadays this is seen as a put off to women. Women don’t like to see men carrying a cat on dating websites. I’m generalising because obviously some women don’t mind it at all (or like it) but a survey indicated that a section of women are presumably looking for more masculine men because they associate the domestic cat with ownership by women. This is a stereotypical concept and a dangerous one.

Further, we all know that there is a wide range of gender types. We can’t pigeonhole people into being female and male and at the extreme of gender types. Therefore there are many women who would like to see a man carrying a cat.

I just think that if these guys knew a bit more about dating they would have used the opportunity in which they found themselves to look a bit more masculine in the hope of attracting a wider female audience!
