UK – Don't Buy a Pet On Gumtree | Blog About Cats.

The link above takes you to a classic case of how it can all go wrong when you buy a pet online from one of these personal sales websites.

There are so many possibilities for problems which affect the buyer financially and emotionally and the animal in terms of health and welfare.

Many sales are fine but you really have to visit the seller at their home/facility when it comes to animals, I believe.

I know many purebred cats are sold online and shipped by air. A1 Savannahs did this successfully for many years and still do and it works most of the time. For me that does not make it any better.

The trouble with personal sales websites like Gumtree is that it attracts unscrupulous sellers and buyers. The “product”, a sentient being, is vulnerable and treated like a commercial asset with little regard for welfare.

Gumtree should be restricted to inanimate objects.

  1. The author of the best comment will receive an Amazon gift of their choice at Christmas! Please comment as they can add to the article and pass on your valuable experience.
  2. Worse than that Michele is animal abusers 🙁 they can get their hands on a puppy or kitten so easily

  3. Totally agree that live animals should not be sold via Gumtree or similar sites.

Have seen some blatantly obvious moggies being passed off as pedigrees and some breed look-alikes which upon closer inspection are from back-yard breeders.

For the private seller there is the danger that without home checks or strict vetting of potential buyers, they can’t be 100% confident of finding a good home for their pet.

I’ve come across numerous horror stories on Y/A of people buying “pedigrees” on these sites, only to end up with a very sickly or short-lived kitten and a huge vet bill 🙁
