URGENT: Please support anti-debark and declaw bill AB 2743

19th August 2010: I have just received an email from the Paw Project asking support for the anti-debark and declaw bill AB 2743 going through the Californian legislature (I wrote about this earlier). It is important that people in America support the bill as the AVMA are fighting it (what else!). The AVMA will wheel out the same old tired arguments but they will wheel them out so we need to counter what effect that might have.
I order to spread the word I reproduce the email here:
The California Legislature is currently considering a bill that would prohibit landlords from requiring tenants to declaw or devocalize their animals.
The full text of AB 2743 is available at this link.
For more information on the bill, you can also visit the Paw Project website.
The Assembly floor vote on AB 2743 was very positive, and AB 2743 is now going to the Senate. The measure narrowly passed the Senate Judiciary Committee with a 3-2 vote, and will be voted on by the full Senate next week.
PLEASE write letters to state senators (find your senator here)
In particular, these Senators should be contacted:

State Capitol, Room 5066
Sacramento, CA 95814
Phone: (916) 651-4030
Fax: (916) 327-8755

When the bill passes the senate, please write to Governor Schwarzenegger (State Capitol Building, Sacramento, CA 95814 — Phone: 916-445-2841 Fax: 916-558-3160). Please note that the governor’s office will probably not consider the letter or calls before the bill passes the Senate. E-mails to the Governor have been ineffective in the past, but go ahead and send them if you have time.
YOUR SUPPORT will be helpful because the California Veterinary Medical Association is lobbying very hard to kill the bill. CVMA is making the rounds of legislators? offices and making its views known to the Governor. It has also sent out an alert to its members stating that it is ?strongly opposed? to the bill and urging its members to send letters of opposition to their state senators and to the Governor.
The CVMA is powerful because many legislators automatically support the position held by a trade or business association. Therefore, letters coming in from across the state strongly in support of the law will be necessary. Please inform as many people and rescue groups as possible.
