What can CBD oil do for my cat?

I’m going to primarily rely a woman in America, Kat (a convenient and appropriate name in the context of this article!), who has gained personal experience of using CBD oil to treat dogs. I feel that her advice can be trusted because of her extensive personal experience. She started a business that I am happy to promote: Austin & Kat. Please seek good veterinary advice as well. Safety is paramount.

Endocannabinoid system

Cats, dogs and people and other animals have an endocannabinoid system. It is complex but the point made is that our bodies and the bodies of our cats use cannabinoids naturally as I understand it. It is a cell-signalling system. Cannabinoids are compounds found in cannabis.

CBD oil takes the place of endocannabinoids if they are failing and not delivering the instructions that they are meant to or if the body is under stress. It is said that CBD can help bring everything back to a state of hemeostasis (relative stability between independent elements).

Ailments suited to CBD treatment

I’m advised that CBD can benefit cats with respect to the following conditions: anxiety, inflammation, pain, seizures/epilepsy, arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and overall wellness.

Administering CBD oil to cats

Kat’s advice is that cat owners should look for CBD oils which contain salmon oil rather than coconut oil-based CBD. For cats, she recommends twice the recommended dosage for dogs at 2 mg to 4 mg of CBD oil per 10 pounds of cat as a starting point.

The reason for the double dosage is because cats don’t have as many cannabinoid receptors as dogs. Twice the dosage is required in order to have the same effect. She also recommends that for cats with seizures or cancers you could start with 4-6 mg of CBD per 10 pounds of domestic cat. Sensibly, she recommends to start at a lower level and then build up while checking that your cat is improving and feeling calmer and better.

It appears that cat owners administering CBD to their cat should not be overly concerned about the precise amounts and that dosing can be approximate until you’re able to work out the best dosage.

The CBD oil is delivered by dropping it onto their food. Apparently cats like the taste of the oil when mixed with salmon and lick it straight off. There appears to be no difficulties in delivering this medicine. It should not be administered sublingually i.e. under the tongue as it may be uncomfortable for a cat. The oil is best taken on a full stomach. Gently experiment to find out what’s best for your cat.

Benefits last for up to 6 hours

The effect should last for 4-6 hours and it takes up to 45 minutes for the effect to be seen. It varies between individual cats or dogs and will depend upon their ailment, their activity levels and, if they are purebred, their breed.

My thanks

I want to thank the website Austin & Kat for their help in providing the advice on the Internet. Kat started a business by experimenting and making CBD biscuits for her 12 year old dog, Brady, who was losing some of his energy and joie de vivre. She found that her biscuits made a big difference to Brady, a “Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever” who was suffering the symptoms of old age.
