Why are many Indonesians so cruel to animals?

The Indonesians who brutally slaughter cats and dogs in meat markets in their country are utterly ignorant, ill-educated bastards. They need to be arrested, convicted and imprisoned under animal welfare legislation which surprisingly does exist but is completely unenforced.

I can’t look at the videos or the photographs which accompany articles about the horrifying images of Indonesia’s cat and dog meat markets. They reveal sickening levels of animal cruelty. It isn’t just in Indonesia that we see sickening levels of animal cruelty. You see it in China and Vietnam and other Asian countries.

I am not going to publish any photos of cats and dogs being killed because they are too sickening.

Right to Criticise

When you criticise these people they say you have no right to criticise them and we shouldn’t interfere in their culture. Well, I say it’s a crappy culture. I say it is a disgusting culture which allows people to do this to animals. Shame on them I say.

Cat and Dog Meat Again

Once again, it’s about eating cat and dog meat. This is a problem which comes up time and again and their defence is that if you can farm livestock to eat what is the difference with doing the same thing to cats and dogs? Well there is a difference. Firstly dogs and cats are companion animals and cows aren’t. Secondly you’re meant to slaughter livestock under regulated conditions so it is done humanely. These Indonesians slaughter cats and dogs in the most brutal of ways with a complete disregard for animal welfare. How they do it is quite beyond me and it is beyond the imagination of most people in the West.

The Problem

You know where the problem originates from; other than the crass ignorance of the people? The problem is this: Indonesians allow their cats and dogs to breed because they don’t neuter them. And therefore there are lots of unwanted stray dogs and cats littering the streets of Indonesia. Enterprising and ignorant Indonesians see this as a resource to be used to make money. So without any regard to animal welfare they collect them up and kill them for their meat.

Government Responsibility

The problem originates in the government of these countries. I’m sure that the Indonesian government is highly corrupt. They do have limited animal welfare legislation in Indonesia. Indonesia’s criminal code does prohibit intentionally causing animals unnecessary harm. I’m sure the legislation prevents causing unnecessary pain to these cats and dogs. But it is carried out in open markets in full view of law enforcement and therefore there is a complete disregard for law enforcement in respect of animal welfare legislation.

People Get Government They Deserve

What is the point therefore of having animal welfare legislation? Were does this disgusting attitude come from in the people of Indonesia? Of course not all Indonesians are terribly cruel to animals. I’m sure there are very many people who like animals and treat them very kindly. Where is their voice? Why don’t they lobby the government to enforce and improve animal welfare laws? People get the government that they deserve. It is impossible to come to any other conclusion other than that the people of Indonesia are not sufficiently concerned with animal welfare and they accept these disgusting dog and cat meat markets.

Changes Afoot?

I’m told that there are changes afoot. A gradual awakening to animal rights and animal welfare. As far as I’m concerned it is coming far too late and far too slowly. It is completely unacceptable. The West can do a lot more as well to drive the Indonesian government to improve animal welfare rights. We can impose sanctions on trade. America can do more by imposing trade tariffs until they improve animal welfare. Why can’t they do this? Is it so difficult?

Why?

It must be something in the culture of Asians that they treat animals so badly and I’m not being racist. I don’t care if anybody calls me a racist. The wicked animal cruelty is there staring us in the face: the disgusting treatment of cats and dogs in meat markets. I want an Indonesian to come onto this website and explain to me why these markets exist. Why aren’t they shut down? Where is the police?

Ignorance

And what the bloody hell is inside the heads of Indonesians which allows them to be so cruel to animals? Why are they so damned ignorant that they think it’s all right to do this? It has got to be about education at the end of the day. If that is case the government should start educating their people. They should include animal welfare in the school curriculum. They should teach children how to interact with animals humanely and decently. This terrible cycle of cruelty to animals needs to stop and it needs to stop urgently. Millions of cats and dogs are killed in the most brutal way. We can’t accept this. It’s a global issue. We can’t stand back and let Indonesians do this to cats and dogs. We should make Indonesia a pariah state until they fix the problem.

I have always had a deep interest in history and human culture attached to it. In the last few decades there has been a pull to soften cultural history and some of the most barbaric practices as acceptable for that period of time. Boils down to apologists saying they just didn’t know better. I highly doubt that. History finds cultures and figures over and over that did not subscribe to barbaric behavior.
It is human choice to behave this way. You cannot be a decent human being and treat any animal in this fashion and if it going on next door then you must learn to speak up.
I have never questioned them about the treatment of animals there rather I have shown them my cats, the plight of stray and feral cats here and talked about how it is wrong for Americans to abuse any animal. I have tried to mentor their thinking of pets and ethical treatment while respecting them as individuals. I hope I have led by example not just words and ideals.

  1. Although this article bends a bit toward religion it is a good read on the rewriting or or normalizing of depraved human behavior. We must excuse all sick twisted human behavior from female genital mutilation ,forced marriages and sickening displays of animal torture in meat markets on full display in third world countries as their culture or cultural heritage. In this particular case I am not addressing animal abuse in first world countries where factory farming and people ranting to kill feral and stray cats which are really homeless domestic pets like vermin. That is even more deplorable than the moron who is chopping up live animals in some Asian countries. Because I worked with some incredible Chinese exchange students this summer I can tell you they have a much more heartfelt view of the world and animals. These beautiful people are the true future of china and most Asian countries.

    • I am sure there are millions of Asians including Indonesians who are kind to cats but this cat meat market horror story indicates a culture that disgusts me. It is there for all to see in plain sight. This is accepted in Indonesia. Therefore the culture is ignorant as far as I am concerned. It isn’t just cat meat markets, they destroy the habitat of tigers. Okay the West has done similar stuff but we know better now. We have moved on. This should not happen today. It looks medieval to me.

  2. Human life has no value there so they do not care about animals. It boils down to supply and demand. If they did not have a demand they would not sell the meat. There are too many people and not enough jobs there and they cannot afford supermarket food. They take their rage out on the animals. Not making excuses for them and yes it is horrible and infuriating.

      • Many people throughout the world were in times past uneducated and ignorant but never tortured and horificaly kill animals. It’s a basic instinct in us to protect. It runs deeper than this and these people who do this are psychopaths.

      • I am tired of hearing people saying we have to always respect the culture of other peoples. We should respect other cultures if it is good and decent. But if it is crap, then sod it. I’ll criticise it. The culture with respect to animal welfare in Indonesia sucks to use an American expression. And the reason is mass ignorance and corruption and bad human behavior as a result.
