Young lion cubs are vulnerable when their pride is taken over by incoming males who have formed a coalition and who move in to take over and dominate the pride. In order to speed up the procreation of their own offspring they make the females receptive to mating and procreation by killing their cubs – infanticide. It’s a question of speeding up the process. Time is of the essence because there will come a time when another coalition of male lions come into the pride and take it over again.
