The domestic cat has super sensitive eyes and needs to reduce light input to very low levels in bright light hence the slit of a pupil and the eyelid coming down to further reduce light entering the eye. I have suggested that lions have less sensitive eyes which means that they don’t need this specialised anatomy and mechanism to reduce light levels.
