Why Does My Cat Keep On Wanting Food?

by Lynne Fowler

Hi, My cat is called Tom. He is 4 years old and he eats in the morning and in the evening. However, he is on a wet food diet only due to the fact he had a blockage a few years ago when he didn’t belong to me.

I have just rescued him from someone who couldn’t look after him. He does seem a bit overweight and he is always asking for food. I would like to know, please, what is wrong with him?

He has not been vet checked as of yet, however, he has been wormed and is still asking for food and I have not seen any worms in his poo. I have looked up thyroid problems, however, this seems to affect cats of an older age.

So just wondered if anybody can help with this issue. He has also joined a multi-cat home, so didn’t know whether this would affect his eating, but he never gets his food eaten by the other cats.

I look forward to hearing from you shortly.

Kind regards Lynne

Admin: In response to your question, “Why Does My Cat Keep On Wanting Food”, two or three things come to mind (subject to a vet’s check). The first is the plain obvious. He likes food. Not all cats, as far as I am aware, eat correct amounts. Also some cats can be a bit defensive and therefore passive (resulting in weight gain) and have struggled a bit to get hold of food in the past and are thus conditioned to seek it all the time. If there are no other symptoms that could be the simple case.

One symptom of feline diabetes is an increased appetite. There are other symptoms. Also cushings disease can result in an increased appetite but there are other symptoms and you have reported none. You have ticked off hyperthyroidism. The excellent book Cat Owner’s Home Veterinary Handbook, Fully Revised and Updated

confirms that the early signs of diabetes include a large appetite. But you have not reported frequent urination, loss of weight, drinking lots of water, which are all symptoms of diabetes as well.

Thanks, by the way for sharing. I hope someone can enlighten further.

I own 3, 2-year old Persians/Himmys and volunteer at a non-kill shelter (death sentence for me). I recently could not bear to see a newly introduced 1-year old Flame point Himmy (5 pounds)– he had been abondoned in a repossessed home. He is so adorable and yet, as the vet said “…is used to fighting for his life.” My kitties, whom I thought would run over him as a gang, just back off with his ‘look.’ He is ALWAYS starving (so he thinks). I am go grateful for your ideas. I will toss his dry food often (they all love that) and limit his dry meal (He prefers wet anyway) but will eat anything.

I have the same problem. I adopted an abandoned l year old pregnant cat who was left behind due to the economy. The vet said she sees it in abandoned cats or adopted cats who are unsure when their next meal will come. She said to break the habit throw a bit of dry food around the room and make the cat hunt for it to divert attn and do not feed when they meow or they are training you. Keep them on a strict schedule and feed only canned as they will put on wieght with the dry food if you do over feed them feeling sorry for them. I divert mine with a laser toy and exercise her hard 5 minutes every hour (she is now indoor) to work her out and wear her out.
