This is Pixie, a very cute little calico Persian, living in Bristol, UK, who looks sad but the only reason she looks sad is because selective breeding has given her an abnormal facial structure of droopy, large eyes and a sad looking mouth. Her appearance is all “manufactured by people”. It is artificial and I hate to spoil the fun but that is the brutal truth. Nature did not give her this expression and if it had it would have been so much better as far as I am concerned.

The ideal Persian should present an impression of a heavily boned, well-balanced cat with a sweet expression and soft, round lines. The large round eyes set wide apart in a large round head contribute to the overall look and expression….
As you can see the modern Persian should have a “sweet expression”, not a sad expression. The appearance of this cute cat is a mistake in strict breeding terms. At a cat show Pixie would do badly. She looks very small too and is probably the runt of a litter.
A lot of people feel that the contemporary Persian has been overbred, meaning selectively bred to extreme. The idea was to improve on the more natural Persian but as usual breeders tend to go far and they ended up with a bit of a monstrosity to be honest which to most eyes looks less attractive than the original.
I have seen this droopy-eyed appearance before. I looks like extreme breeding gone wrong. Pixie seems to have watery eyes too. The anatomy of the head is so distorted as to cause health problems concerning breathing and tear drainage.
I hate to be a party pooper but this UK cat celebrity is man made; a Frankenstein-like product.
The nice thing about this is that her caretaker, Sophie Batt, seems to be a nice lady and a good cat guardian so Pixie is in a good home. That is the important thing.
It seems that the UK is seeking their own Grumpy Cat. The media want a UK cat to compete with Grumpy Cat on the international cat celebrity stage. Grumpy is also a deformed cat. People forget these things. People are obsessed with appearance while not paying attention to the more serious aspects of how we get to having these cats.
I like fun as much as the next person but not at the expense of cat health. Peoples’ obsession with physical appearance is not healthy for either people or other animals. We need to look for entertainment from other sources that don’t abuse animals.
Without wishing to go on too long, the modern Persian is really an abuse of the domestic cat species. It is also in breach of the CFA’s own guidelines on cat breeding (unhealthy breeding) but no one mentions that in the corridors of the headquarters of the CFA.

Well said Eva, we think the same way and a lot of people think like us. I’d love to know the percentage of people who have our attitude. It will be less than 50% because if it was more there would be no World’s Saddest Cat.

Yes, agreed. She has some eye problems. Not surprising. We are not allowed to talk about those things though. If it is cute it is good.
But it’s not cute, it’s sad and it’s unkind and I am talking about it loud and clear.
Poor little soul with her nipped in flat face and hug eyes, really she is a freak but because there is no such thing as an ugly cat then in her own way she is still beautiful. I just wish people would leave cats alone and stop modifying them.
It’s heart breaking that human beings mess with breeding and cause cats to be born this way, they should realise that Nature designed perfection.

What is particularly very human and a bit sick is that we find these strange man-made creations sad. It is sad. Why can’t we stop doing this?
Because we humans are warped beings with the power to do what we like to animals and some of us do it just because we can!

Yes Kylee, yet breeders are still trying to create new breeds and for every kitten they sell, another one in a Shelter dies for lack of a home.
Well as i stated i will not support Pedigrees I mean they are lovely and pretty but whos got a spare 300-1000 laying around -Not me its abit different with Dogs. I just think its not fair on the Animal as well as all those poor cats and kitties. I saw one of Elisas thing to do with a cat being close to be destroyed and her name was jasmine only 3 months old. How can people do that!! If i owned my own house I’d have as many cats as possible, well within reason of course. I feel sad for the kittens and then die at not even getting to 6 months. People really need to think closer and to get responsible and get them fixed it would have millions of lives. I agree with mandartory. I mean in US, UK its really Cheap to get them Fixed. Cost 170 to get jasmine Fixed, Vaccination, wormed etc.
I agree Michael. Why do they keep breeding Pedigree animals when there’s lots out there. I will always only get Rescue Cats or Cats from Shelters and Domestic Moggies. As i refuse to give a Pedigree which cost lots more. When there is perfectly good animals needing Homes.
