Why Your Cat Might Like to Lie Under the Duvet With You in the Morning

If you share your bed with a cat, you may enjoy – like me – a charming ritual: each morning, your cat burrows under the duvet and settles beside you. I hold the duvet off his slightly and the session lasts for around 20 minutes at a maximum until he is too hot!! It’s not just adorable—it’s deeply meaningful. This behaviour reveals a lot about how your cat sees you, and what they need to feel secure, loved, and content. Let’s explore the key reasons behind this affectionate habit.

Warmth and Physical Comfort

Cats are heat-seeking creatures. Their body temperature runs higher than ours, and they instinctively seek out the warmest spots in the home. Your bed, especially under the duvet, is like a cosy nest—soft, quiet, and insulated. Add the warmth of your sleeping body and it becomes the perfect retreat. In the wild, cats choose warm, sheltered areas to rest in safety. Under your duvet is the domestic equivalent.

Trust and Bonding

When a cat chooses to lie close to you—especially in an enclosed space—it signals a strong bond of trust. Cats are naturally cautious sleepers. They only relax deeply when they feel safe. Crawling under the covers and curling up next to you is a significant gesture: it means your cat sees you not only as a provider, but as a member of their inner social circle. This is a time when your cat feels emotionally open, and wants to share that moment with you.

Scent: The Hidden Language of Cats

Perhaps the most important but often overlooked reason your cat loves this morning cuddle is scent. To a cat, scent is everything. It’s how they recognise territory, form bonds, and feel at home. Your bedding is saturated with your unique body scent—more so than any other place in the house. To your cat, this scent is profoundly reassuring. It marks you as familiar, safe, and beloved.

When your cat slips under the duvet, they’re not just seeking physical closeness—they’re surrounding themselves in your scent. It’s a deeply comforting experience, almost like returning to a mother’s warmth. In fact, this connection through scent is likely stronger than the physical contact itself. It brings emotional calm, reduces anxiety, and reinforces the cat’s sense of place and belonging.

Routine and Territory

Cats are creatures of habit. If this behaviour has become a daily event, it’s also a matter of routine. Your cat looks forward to this ritual. It brings consistency and peace, and it’s part of the territory you both share. By choosing to spend that time with you, your cat is reaffirming that this space—and your companionship—are central to their life.

In Summary
If and when your cat climbs under the duvet and lies beside you in the early morning, they are expressing warmth-seeking instincts, a deep trust in you, and most importantly, a need to be enveloped in your scent. It’s a quiet, meaningful moment that says: you are home to me. Far from being just cute behaviour, it’s a powerful demonstration of feline affection and security.
