The RSPCA Stole My Cats

by Marie
(Sheffield England uk)

I live in the UK and I have spent the the last decade devoting my life to unwanted cats and kittens and feeding the hungry and unwell semi-feral cats in the area.

However bad and nasty neighbours decided that the cats were vermin (my own cats were included in this debate by them) and called the REPCA who set traps and my own 6 adult cats were never seen again by myself nor my family.

The first I knew was when I went on their website to see 2 of my cats being offered for adoption after supposedly being feral (but the ad said that Virgil, the name given to my lovable red tabby, was feral but liked his tummy rubbed????).

He was (as were the others) wearing collars when trapped then whisked off to the surgeon to have bits chopped off.

When I said I wanted my cats back I was told I had to pay over £600 for each cat they had trapped.

I was gutted and since then I devote my time with other cat lovers fighting the do gooders who do nothing but meddle in creatures’ lives often causing death simply because they decide there’s enough cats in the area.

My advise is do not trust these people. I forgot to mention that my red tabby was infertile so it was totally unjust to castrate him.

That’s crazy! Only a horrible, evil human being would trap cats! I hope that those neighbors of yours are taught a lesson!

Please let us know how this turns out. It’s a shame when housecats can just be snatched up

Marie you shouldn’t let this situation pass, those people had no right what-so-ever to take your cats away from you, they had no right to do that.

That’s a ridiculous amount of money to pay (more than $1000 in Australian dollars) I didn’t even pay that much for my Abyssinian and his air fares!

Are your cats still at the RSPCA? If so I will contact them to help you out, what they did was selfish and wrong, they’re meant to rescue animals, not steal them from their homes…

Marie,I’m so sorry for you.How dare the RSPCA take the word of cat haters and take away your cats as well as other cats you were kind enough to feed. Cats with collars obviously belong to someone, they should know that surely.
People who hate cats can be so very nasty, they only see ‘pesky cats’ not each individual cat which has the right to be fed and cared for.
It’s ignorant people who abandon cats that cause the problem of strays and ferals in the first place.
Fight them ! Let Michael help you !
Cat haters like those who made this trouble for you are bitter people who in reality are inadequate and love the feeling of power doing things like that.
It’s outrageous asking for £600 for each cat, trapping and neutering and the cat’s keep wouldn’t cost that much. I don’t think they should get away with asking this huge sum !
They are supposed to attend to animals truly in distress but are never there when you want them for that. Not that long ago, they didn’t want to know about an old injured dog in the road, owner unknown, which some friends saw.Nor did the police.Luckily a vet took pity on him and came out.
Don’t let them get away with this bullying, Marie.

Jun 11, 2010 the “R.S.P.C.A” stole my cats
by: Rudolph.A.Furtado

I was wondering as to the reasons i didn’t see a single “Stray Cat” on the streets of London during my stay in the city between tueday(25-5-2010) to Tuesday(1-6-2010), and the reasons now very obvious. A fine of 600 Sterling for a seized “stray cat” could finance a short holidey for myself in London! Its atroscious to just seize any cat outdoors, still worse is “destroying ” them.A positive aspect of these “Heavy Fines’ is that it also helps in creating responsible “Cat Ownership”, unlike in most Ciy’s, including Mumbai where pets are routinely abandoned to live or die a miserable life on the streets.

Hi Marie, thanks for sharing. I am upset to read your story. There may be some detail that you have not had the time to tell us but on the face of it, the RSPCA stole your cats which is why I changed the title.

I don’t know when this happened but if it was recently, please provide some more detail if you can and if you want me to contact the RSPCA to try and get your cats back I will.

I have a knack of getting people to change their mind.

    • Hi Charlotte, the RSPCA don’t have a complaints procedure as far as I can tell. They seem to have too much power when it comes to cases like yours. I would write to the Chief Executive who I believe is Gavin Grant and make a complaint. The idea that you have of a friend adopting your cat is good. You might try that but do it subtly.

One last point. I don’t know you and don’t know the circumstances. The RSPCA may have had good reason to take your cat for all I know. However, I trust you and you seem genuine so I want to try and help but it is difficult. There is not a lot one can do and I have searched for a complaints procedure without success. Good luck Charlotte and I hope you have a reasonable Christmas.

  2. I had the RSPCA come to the house yesterday after receiving a phone call they forced me to sign over my cat, she then said that he needed to be put down because he was dehydrated but he is perfectly fine he had been eating and drinking the whole weekend. She also said that she would take him to the vet that he is registered with but when i rang up he wasn’t there or in any other vet in my town. I’m still trying to find out whats going on.

    • Charlotte, I am shocked to read your comment. I’d like to know some more about this. Why did the RSPCA come around in the first place? It seems the RSPCA lied about taking your cat to the vet. Thank you for visiting and commenting.

  3. It wasn’t the RSPCA’s fault – itwas those evil neighbours of yours! But i do agree, the RSPCA should have checked if those neighbours were telling the truth, eh?
