Fuzzy

Fuzzy was about 5 weeks old when I found him. I was taking a walk with my Dad and we saw something running in the ditch and my Dad scooped him up.

He was scared to death and bit and scratched at first but then was calm. He was a tiny little kitten and his eyes were not open but he was able to run and walk (not wobbly like a newborn).

We later found out that he was born with no eyes. Someone had dumped several kittens in our neighborhood and Fuzzy was the first to be captured. My neighbor's all took in the others.

Fuzzy is now 2 years old and the joy of my life. He wakes me every morning around 5 am with a nuzzle to tell me its time to give him some attention.

He also sleeps with me and runs to the door when I get home. He is definitely MY cat, I live with my husband and 2 sons whom all love him also but he always comes to sit by or on me.

Even though Fuzzy is completely blind he still has a very active life. He runs up and down the halls and jumps up on the couch and coffee table.

He gets a little confused when I don't have my recliner open for him, but he always sticks a paw out there to check and he will wait for me to open it so he can get across.

He also runs around in our backyard (with supervision of course). He loves to catch grasshoppers and climbs trees. He also chases paper balls and loves boxes. He can always find his litter box even though we have moved it a few times but prefers to go outside and will cry at the door to go out.

I don't know who would have the heart to leave a blind kitten to fend for himself but I'm very glad we found him that day.

I'd love to hear more on Fuzzy. I have a blind dog and he gets around fine. Animals are so brave. With all the reading I do I believe people will do anything to a defenseless animal. You're a good writer. I'd like to talk over you doing something for Fuzzy from Fuzzys point of view. EMail me at furbythecat1@gmail.com when you have time.

Your Fuzzy reminds me of my ex-feral cat Monty-- who is also the joy of my life. Sometimes I wonder how I can love a little cat so much, even when he's waking me up for his breakfast at 4 a.m. everyday or meowing to go outside while I'm trying to type this...

When I was nine I had some friends who had a blind Siamese cat named Sonia. She was blind because of age, not from birth, but I was always amazed at how well she could get around, even jumping up onto and off of the bed. Of course, she'd grown up in that house, and as she went blind they kept all the furniture the same so it would be easier for her.

Monty is the opposite of Fuzzy in that he will not go potty outside. We can be out there together for almost two hours and upon coming in he will run right to his litter box. Heaven forbid he would do that outside and deprive me of the joy of scooping it!

I hope you have many happy years with your fuzzy friend!

Hi Kimi. What a wonderful story - I understand why you call Fuzzy the joy of your life.
Until a few weeks ago I would have thought you were maybe overstating Fuzzy's abilities a little, but then I saw the video of Gwen Cooper's Homer *) in Michael's article 'What Has Your Cat Taught You?' - and that changed my mind completely.
Blind cats are indeed capable of adapting to their situation to the extend where you hardly notice the can't see. It still amazes me!

*) Unfortunatety the Homer video is no longer there. Anybody seen it elsewhere?

Fuzzy is beautiful and so obviously happy with you. How anyone can dump kittens, especially a blind one I just don't know.
I'm so glad Fuzzy has such a wonderful home.

Lovely story of the wonderful adaptability, acute senses and courage of the domestic cat. I am always in awe of how blind cats behave in almost the same way as sighted cats.

And then your love for your cat - that makes it all possible.

Thanks for sharing. I love these stories.
