This is Mumbai, India where they have a compact nature reserve very near or inside the city. There are leopards inside the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. I am guessing but it seems likely that the leopard in the video wandered out of the reserve into someone’s home looking for food. I seems remarkable and frankly irresponsible to have a national park inside a major city. The park’s address is: Gujarat Road, Borivali East, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400066, India. This proves that it is inside Mumbai. Perhaps at one time it was outside this sprawling city of 18.4 million (London is about 8 million). As at 2018 there were 41 leopards in the park.

The great danger for leopards (and, of course, humans) is conflict with humans. There are countless incidences of leopards wandering incongruously down sidewalks and through backyards in India where they encounter scared people some of whom want to act macho and tackle the animal. At the end of the day the leopard loses and dies, attacked by an army of residents or shot by the authorities.

This is dysfunctional. It does not work but I suppose the Sanjay Gandhi National Park is a great and profitable tourist attraction, one of the desirable assets of Mumbai and there is no chance of it being closed so the authorities put up with the inconvenience of the odd person being attacked by a leopard and in this case a dog being dragged out of his/her home into the night where he became a meal for this resourceful wild cat.

You can see how relatively small the leopard is in the video. I think people have a slightly distorted idea of the size of the leopard. They are not as big as people think but they are very agile and work at night to avoid humans.

When I first saw the video I puzzled as to what the animal was because of its relatively small size.

  1. I feel bad for the dog,I really do but because of humans encroaching onto their habitat this will happen more and the leopard will pay the price, humans need to fecking stop reproducing and like ye said Michael there isnt enough space for both cat and human.

  2. Humans will always be a problem for animals. In India they are so fucking overpopulated, I’m surprised they are not shitting on each other. And the country is so very dirty and the rivers dying because of humans waste. This leopard is the not the problem. The poor dog I feel for but with humans taking all the wild places for these animals what the hell do they expect!

    • 🙂 They are overpopulated but not quite sitting on each other – yet. Thankfully it is a large country but there isn’t enough space for leopards and people together. Certainly not in and around Mumbai.
