The picture shows the position of the bellybutton on a newborn domestic cat. All cats have belly buttons. This is because they are placental mammals. Cats are part of the group (‘order’) called Carnivora. Within that order there are 280 placental mammals and one which is the cat. The bellybutton or navel is where the umbilical cord joins the body and connects the unborn kitten with the mother’s placenta. After birth the mother severs the umbical cord and normally eats it and her placenta.
