In the UK, the Highway Code (rule 57) specifies that cat and dog owners must keep their companion animals restrained inside their vehicle when it is travelling in order to prevent the animal becoming a projectile in the event of an accident and also to prevent the animal from distracting them while driving which may lead to an accident. A lot of people are unaware of this Highway code rule as found in an Auto Trader survey.
