Istanbul metro cat snoozes in most unlikely position because (I am guessing here) the stainless steel plate on which she rest is warm because below it is an electric motor which gets hot and which drives the escalator. She ignores the people because the attraction to the warmth is stronger than the aversion to the masses of people walking very close to her. This may be because she is ill and the warmth helps her cope.
