Why do cats hiss?

The cat has learned to mimic the snake’s hiss and it is intended to frighten away threatening animals on the basis that the hostile animal recognises the snake’s hiss as something to be avoided and therefore will be encouraged to avoid the cat who hisses. It is a simple example of the domestic cat learning that animals dislike the sound of the snake’s hiss and therefore in making the sound it helps to protect them from hostile predators and other creatures.
