Pregnant Cat Surprises With Huge Litter
In a heartwarming and unusual turn of events, a rescued stray cat in Los Angeles has captured hearts after giving birth to an exceptionally large litter. Nicknamed “Honey” by her foster caregiver, this resilient feline delivered a stunning 12 kittens, more than double the average number typically expected in a feline litter.
Honey was taken in by animal foster volunteer Manda Malina, who noticed the heavily pregnant stray outdoors and quickly intervened to ensure her safety. Expecting a standard-sized litter of four to six kittens, Malina was astounded as one kitten after another arrived—eventually totaling a dozen. “I was shocked,” she shared. “They just kept coming.”
While such large litters are rare, they’re not unheard of. The largest recorded cat litter consisted of 19 kittens. Still, Honey’s case is remarkable and demonstrates both the unpredictability of nature and the critical role of foster care in animal welfare.
Despite Honey’s attentive maternal instincts, she couldn’t produce enough milk to sustain all twelve kittens. Two were stillborn, and two more succumbed to fading kitten syndrome, a condition where young kittens fail to thrive despite appearing healthy at birth. Fortunately, the remaining eight were quickly given round-the-clock bottle-feeding and intensive monitoring by Malina.
Now about four weeks old, the surviving kittens are thriving. Malina weighs them daily to ensure they’re developing properly. Once they are fully weaned—usually around 12 weeks of age—each kitten will be made available for adoption through a network of local rescue groups. Two families have already expressed interest in adopting, reflecting the widespread support the story has received online.
