Wild cats of New York state in an infographic

There is some uncertainty on how many wild cat species live in New York state but the strong argument is that there is only one: the bobcat. The Catster website says with confidence that there are two wild cat species in NY state, the other being the Canada lynx. However, my extensive research clearly tells me that there are no resident Canada lynx in NY state. If a Canada lynx is sighted it is likely that the sighting concerned a bobcat which is similar in appearance or the Canada lynx was travelling through the state having come from over the border from Canada.

Some further information

Harvesting of bobcats: being an animal advocate the term ‘harvesting bobcats’ is unpleasant and unacceptable. For the trappers who take 400-500 bobcats out of NY state annually my distaste for their work will be incomprehensible. Fair enough. I respect the views of others.

But I don’t see it as acceptable. A lot of animal cruelty is committed in this ‘harvesting’. Advertisers on this site probably don’t like me being an animal advocate. They are mainstream businesses and they consider animal advocate crusty, fringe people who are a little deranged. We are not. Animal advocates are more advanced in their thinking that people at the other end of the spectrum.

Once again, I respect their views. I just disagree. California is ahead of most states of the US in terms of conservation and the protection of the wild cat species. They have banned the trapping of bobcats. See, it can be done.
