This is a list of cat breeds in alphabetical order with the date they were created and the place of origin. You will see variations on this information on the internet. This also applies to this site because the origins of cat breeds are not always crystal clear.
Desmond Morris’s book Cat World lists the breeds by origin too (this may differ to some other sources). They say that the USA is the place of origin for 35 cat breeds. Britian comes second with 15 cat breeds. Countries with 2 cat breeds of origin are: Canada (Sphynx and Cymric), Germany (Prussian Rex and German Rex), Japan (Japanese bobtail long and shorthair), Singapore (Singapura and Wild Abyssinian), Turkey (Turkish Van and Angora). Those countries with 3 cats are: Russia (Siberian Forest Cat, Russian Blue and Urals Rex) and Thailand (Burmese, Korat and Siamese). Italy is the place of origin for 3 breeds too: European Shorthair, Colourpoint European Shorthair and the Italian Rex.
Also, the word “origin” can be interpreted in different ways and, on occasions, you will also get some variation in the name of cat breeds. This is not necessarily a complete list but it is a good list. Please go to this page: Pictures of Cat Breeds and follow links for much more on these breeds. In all, my estimate is that there are around 104 cat breeds but many are on the fringes or have fizzled out.
