Google Trends tells me that Karate Cats and particularly Karate Cats Maths are trending upwards under the general umbrella of the search term “cat”. It’s also worth noting that dogs are about as twice as popular as cats in terms of a search term on Google search. Does that mean that dogs are twice as popular as cats? I don’t think it does but it certainly means that dogs are of more interest to people in terms of finding information about them than cats.

So, what is Karate Cats? My understanding is that it is an educational program featuring the domestic cat to teach children maths and English and so on. It makes the process fun. I guess that is the idea. And they have tapped into the worldwide interest of domestic cats on the Internet. That interest is still there remarkably.

Karate Cats was created and designed in-house at a business based in Bath, UK called Complete Control. The game is built into HTML 5 and it is integrated into the BBC Bitesize website. It’s available across tablet, mobile and desktop devices.

Each cat was designed and animated in-house to give fun rewards throughout the games and unlock fun cats in the Dojo, to keep the kids coming back. – Complete Control

With respect to creating English language lessons, they partnered with English content specialists Teachit to provide 360 English questions at easy, medium and hard levels.

Comment: what can I take from the knowledge that Karate Cats is on an upward trajectory? For me possibly two things: there are more children learning online than before because I guess of Covid having driven people back into their homes to learn and it seems that a number of children have not returned to the classroom at school. That’s probably a legacy of Covid. Therefore, they watch Karate Cats at home.

Secondly, cats are still very popular as a learning tool. Cats generate interest from the outset and if they can encourage kids to learn about maths and English so much the better. It’s nice to know that the domestic cat is still very popular, perhaps as popular or more so than it was when videos and images of domestic cats emerged as one of the most popular topics on the Internet.
