The topic of feeding raw meat to pets, particularly dogs, has been previously debated. A recent trend involves feeding dogs raw meat, which may increase the risk of owners being exposed to antibiotic-resistant bacteria, as indicated by a study. Researchers discovered E. coli in 13 out of 15 raw meat samples, with a high percentage showing resistance to multiple antibiotics, including those deemed critically important for human medicine. Although the study has not undergone peer review, it highlights a lack of awareness among pet owners regarding the potential risks of handling and feeding raw meat to their dogs.
The findings were presented at a conference of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases in Barcelona, emphasizing the link between raw meat diets for dogs and the presence of antibiotic-resistant E. coli in their feces. This could increase the likelihood of transmitting resistant bacteria to humans within the same household. Conducted at Bristol University, the study advises pet owners to exercise caution when handling raw dog food and their pets’ feces. It is common practice to purchase raw dog meat frozen and then thaw it before serving.
Frequently, raw dog meat is purchased frozen and then thawed prior to serving. This can result in additional contamination concerns if the thawing process is not conducted with sufficient care. This is a personal observation.
The UK’s Kennel Club stated that there is considerable debate among veterinarians, pet nutritionists, and dog owners regarding the healthiness of a raw dog food diet. They further noted that while some specialists assert that a raw diet provides numerous health benefits for dogs, others caution against potential risks associated with dogs consuming raw food.
Regarding cats, the primary concern with feeding them raw food is the presence of pathogens like Toxoplasma gondii, a zoonotic parasite. Much has been discussed on this topic, so I will not reiterate it. However, it’s important to note that similar issues exist with feeding raw meat to cats as they do with dogs.
