This is a very tragic story about an animal lover who was recently found murdered in Upstate South Carolina. It’s a story of sacrifice because through their grief, the family is thinking of the animals at a local kill shelter. They’re also offering a reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
Mike Mecklenburg, 59, was a New York animal lover who moved to Greenville to be closer to his family. He served on the neighborhood panel of the Design Review Board, an advisory body made up of volunteers who work to restore historic neighborhoods.
Will Mecklenburg said his brother had been working as an Uber driver, as he was between jobs. Apparently, Uber jobs can be dangerous. You never know what kind of person you’re picking up. Mike was found unresponsive in his car on Power Street in the City View area on April 14 at around 3:15 a.m. He died of a single gunshot wound to the head shortly after dropping off an Uber rider on Power Street.
Police aren’t releasing much additional information on the case. According to Greenville County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Ryan Floyd, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been identified.
The family is offering a $15,000 reward. They’ve also asked that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Greenville County Animal Care at 328 Furman Hall Road. A memorial service is planned for Saturday at 4 p.m. At Mackey Mortuary in Greenville.
Anyone out there with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 23-CRIME.
I think it’s a wonderful idea to donate to a local animal shelter or Humane Society instead of sending flowers. Flowers are more appreciated by the living. It’s better to help animals in need than to surround a funeral home viewing room with flowers. I believe Mike would approve of the decision made by his family.
This is something more animal lovers should consider and leave instructions for their family. May Mike’s loved ones find peace and his killer caught and brought to justice.
