RELATED: 12 facts on keeping an indoor cat happy

We (good cat caregivers) know that ensuring your feline friend’s happiness is an essential aspect of our duties! Here are some tips to keep your Maine Coon cat content and joyful:

  1. Social Interaction: Maine Coons are sociable creatures as are most domestic cats in general. Spend quality time with your cat, engage in play, and provide companionship. They thrive on human interaction. It is a mistake to think that domestic cats are ‘independent’ and solitary. They are not; unlike their wildcat forebears. They need the company of and interaction of their human caregiver which means that long hours away from home is unsuited to good caregiving. Being alone for long hours on a convenient diet of dry food is a good way of giving your cat a urinary tract infection.
  2. Cat Trees and Scratching Posts: I mentioned a cat tree earlier, which is perfect! Maine Coons love to climb and explore as do all cats. Cat trees provide exercise, mental stimulation, and a cozy spot to observe their surroundings. It can also help a cat to feel calmer.
  3. Grooming: Regular grooming is crucial. Maine Coons have long fur that can get tangled. Brush their coat to prevent matting and keep them comfortable. A great way to make a cat happy. I recommend some quality combs for this task.
  4. Nutrition: Feed your cat a balanced diet. High-quality cat food with the right nutrients supports overall health and happiness. Recommended: wet all the way with occassional dry and treats.
  5. Toys and Enrichment: Maine Coons are playful. Offer a variety of toys, puzzle feeders, and scratching pads to keep them mentally engaged. Maine Coons are nearly always FT indoor cats which places an added obligation on the caregiver to mentally stimulate their cat. It will pay dividends in reducing stress and boredom with associated benefits to health. Good health means less vet costs 😉👍.
  6. Safe Outdoor Exploration: If possible, allow supervised outdoor time. Maine Coons enjoy exploring nature and feeling the breeze. Recommended: leash training. There are some great videos of leash trained Maine Coons going for cat walkies (not like dog walkies 🙄)
  7. Healthcare: Regular vet visits ensure your cat’s well-being. Vaccinations, parasite control, and dental care are essential. Maine Coon have genetic inherited diseases of which HCM is the most damaging to health. For Maine Coons I’d recommend saving $100 per month to put into you own savings account designated “My Maine Coon’s pet health policy!” 😎💕. The money saved therein should be ringfenced.

Remember, each cat is unique, so observe your Maine Coon’s behavior and adjust accordingly. A happy cat means a happy home! 😺🏡
