A cat in Russia is being hailed a heroine after being credited with saving the life of an abandoned baby.

Masha is a long-haired tabby, who is as intelligent as she is beautiful. Someone recently abandoned a baby in the cold streets of Russia. The infant, determined to be under three months old, was left in a cardboard box at the foot of the stairs in an apartment building where Mashla likes to sleep. Whoever dropped off the infant also left a little hat, some baby food and a few diapers.

Masha’s mothering instincts took over when the cat saw the baby sleeping in her box, and climbed in, curling up close to keep the little one warm. Here’s a short video of Masha
Not only did Masha share her kitty body heat with the wee one, she also meowed to get the attention of someone who could help. Since Masha is a community cat, looked after by the local residents, the person who answered her cry for help was stunned to find the cat in the box with a baby. Obninsk city resident Irina Lavrovan told Central European News how she found the two curled up together in the stairwell.

βShe is very placid and friendly, so when I heard her meowing, I thought that perhaps she had injured herself. Normally she would have come and said hello to me. You can imagine my shock when I saw her lying in a box next to a baby.β
According to a hospital spokesman the baby had only been out in the cold for a few hours and wasn’t physically harmed from being abandoned. Now Masha is being called a hero, and the neighborhood residents in charge of her care are rewarding the cat with her favorite food.
An investigation is being conducted to find the parents of the baby.
We hear so many stories of dog heroes, it’s nice to see a cat getting recognition for saving a life.
Oh I saw this on Facebook and I just Love it. I love the story how a Community cat so great to see she is looked after my people in the Neighbourhood. Cant believe someone would leave a baby out in the cold like that. It would be even better if someone gave that Cat a Forever home. π
I think articles I’ve done about domestic violence and animal cruelty going hand in hand will be online forever. I’ve learned news has two categories. Breaking news and evergreen. I do very few evergreen articles these days. Most of what I do is helping rescues raise money for sick cats and dogs. I did just do this one that has nothing to do with pets. I write what I want and this one just hit a nerve. I don’t do many that aren’t about dogs or cats, but I had to cover this. http://www.examiner.com/article/air-force-veteran-nc-receives-nasty-note-on-car-for-parking-veterans-spot
I agree with all the points you make. I have a whole series of pages for kids. It is important to keep things simple. However, in the very long term articles full of detailed informatiom, even ones which are difficult to understand for some people, like some Sarah Hartwell’s of Messybeast.com, do stand the test of time. They last for ever. News stories tend to come and go.

What an amazing story! I think the cat did what comes naturally. Seeking a source of warmth to sleep with. Her instinct to keep herself warm saved the baby. It’s a miracle that the baby was left there for Misha to rescue. A wonderful story and kitty.
