Crookshanks is a ginger, tabby Persian cat – a purebred cat. He has tear duct overflow as evidenced by staining below his eyes which is typical of Persian cats because of their flat-face which distorts the anatomy of the tear ducts and blocks them. He has matted fur which is also fairly typical of a Persian cat who has not been groomed properly 😎. Persian cats struggle to groom themselves properly because their fur is so long and therefore their human caregiver’s have to intervene and help them on a daily basis.
Truthfully, he looks a bit of a mess and not very well looked after if I am being really critical. Although Persian cats do have a rather messy face because, as mentioned, they have staining under the eyes. In the second paragraph on this page, you can see the coat is matted. The background has been removed by somebody which in a way highlights the matting.
Ginger tabby cats are also red, marmalade or yellow cats.
Crookshanks is Hermione Granger’s pet cat. He is said to have a lion-like appearance. Ironically, the Persian cat is about as far from the lion as you can get! Persian cats are known to be a bit sensitive and ‘part of the furniture’ meaning that there are not very active.
Crookshanks is said to be able to solve problems on his own without aid or teaching and has a clear dislike of untrustworthy people who he can spot even if they have transfigured. There is some truth in that because the domestic cat has great senses and there is a wonderful story about a hospice cat in America who was able to detect when cancer patients living there were about to die.
And domestic cats have a wonderful ability to navigate long distances. Perhaps they are able to sense the Earth’s magnetic field. People aren’t quite sure how they can do it but that’s probably the best suggestion. Some humans, too, can sense the Earth’s magnetic field which makes them more able to navigate.
Crookshanks is said to be half-Kneazle. A “Kneazle” is a magical feline creature related to and similar in appearance to a cat. They can mate with genuine cats and normally have up to 8 kittens per litter. If Crookshanks is half-Kneazle, it means that he is a hybrid cat; half a magical cat and half a normal domestic cat companion. I guess that is why he has these magical qualities.
