The picture explains what a cat ruff is and where the word comes from. As usual cat breeders like to employ the language describing clothing from years ago; in this case from the mid-sixteenth century to the mid-seventeenth century. Breeders also use the word ‘britches’ a distortion of ‘breeches’ to describe long fur on the upper part of a cat’s hind legs. Cat association breed standards refer to these terms (see picture).
