Strange photograph of cat’s head sticking out of concrete floor

This photograph made me look twice. It looks as though this cat has been concreted in to the floor by some malicious thug except that he looks relaxed and content. There is a straightforward explanation thankfully.

Apparently there is space underneath this concrete floor and the floor has a hole in it. It seems that he crawled into the space under the floor and then poked his head through the hole. Why not? It seems perfectly logical to me.

The report says that he was too fat to climb through the hole. I think that that is unfair because the hole is quite small in its diameter so he does not have to be fat to be unable to get through it. Also, it is likely that it was impossible for him to place his paws onto something so that he could push himself out.

The incident took place in the city of Chelyabinsk, Russia. The sun.co.uk reports that he was trying to get out of a nearby seller. Passers-by saw him and wanted to assist. One person, Yuliya Korobeinikova, saw his head popping through the concrete and quite obviously could not walk by. I would have the same reaction.

They tried to push his head back into the hole but he resisted (normal cat behaviour). It appears that they eventually succeeded and then covered the hole with a tyre (tire). At which point he managed to wriggle his way back into the cellar and free himself. He then ran away without thanking his rescuers which is also perfectly normal and logical behaviour if you are a cat. I don’t think that he needed rescuing. And I think he knew that.

The cat is well-known in the area and the children like him. The incident did not affect him. I just like the photograph although it is a bit disturbing on first sight.

  2. Pleased to hear there wasn’t a sinister story to accompany this photo.

It reminded me of an electrician I saw on TV who used his (willing) pet cat to help him lay underfloor cables. He cut two small holes in the floorboards at opposite sides of the room and attached the cable to the cat’s collar. The cat would disappear down one hole and then emerge from the second hole.
