Mr Louis is one cat of many millions who has suffered the long-term detrimental consequences of declawing. In this instance he walks like a woman on wobbly stilettos. That sounds like a flippant statement but the truth is that this cat has lost a part of his life because of the callous treatment by an uncaring veterinarian.
It is estimated that between 20 and 30% of domestic cats in America and Canada are declawed but things are changing. For example the province of Nova Scotia, Canada banned declawing very recently. The attitude in Canada is changing. Regrettably around 60% of Americans still favor declawing perhaps through lack of awareness of its true nature. Veterinarians don’t do enough to educate.
Nova Scotia, a Canadian province on the Atlantic coast is the first geographical area larger than a city to ban declawing. In doing so others may follow including I would hope a US state or states. There is a gradual distaste for declawing amongst North American vets as it blatantly flies in the face of their oath and all they stand for.
This is fun! Yes, indeed. So refreshing to see a veterinarian declaw a human on video. It gets the point across: don’t declaw. I’d like a few veterinarians to be the recipient of this cruel operation. They’d change their minds about it instantly.
A proposal to ban cat declawing passed in Denver’s city council Monday night resulting in the 9th city in the USA to ban declawing. All the other cities are in ‘progressive’ California. There are no statewide bans to declawing as yet although it has been debated in council in NY state for example. This …
This is an horrendous example of cat claw regrowth after the declaw operation 12 years earlier. The photo is graphic. Regrowth is not uncommon and just one of many possible complications of this barbaric operation.
The Paw Project have completely trashed the arguments – the feeble and well trodden clichéd arguments – of the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) on the subject of cat declawing.
Yes, it’s time, really time. And I’d like to link to a page by a American veterinarian who tells us why he thinks it is time to change. It is a really good and thorough page on why stopping declawing is essential. There is no point in me reciting it using different words. So …
Note: Some older videos on this page were hosted on Vimeo. That account has now been retired, so a few video blocks may appear blank. Thanks for understanding — there’s still plenty of cat content to enjoy!
