Why do mountain lions have so many names?

PoC avatarPosted on July 3, 2020 by Michael BroadJuly 3, 2020

The reason is twofold. This famous wild cat species has a very wide distribution across the Americas although it is shrinking. Also, it has been recognised and recorded for many hundreds of years which has given widely disparate races and … Continue reading →

Wild cat species in Michigan

PoC avatarPosted on May 12, 2020 by Michael BroadMay 13, 2020

According to some “experts” there are possibly two wild cat species in Michigan: the Canada lynx and bobcat. The lynx is ‘possible extant’. However, sightings contradict this and it may be reasonable to assume that there are certainly two and … Continue reading →

What is the largest mountain lion on record?

PoC avatarPosted on February 20, 2020 by Michael BroadFebruary 20, 2020

There will be a dispute about this but I believe that I have a definitive record for the largest or heaviest (should be the same) mountain lion on record because it was certified by the U.S. Biological Survey. The cat … Continue reading →

PoC avatarPosted on December 10, 2019 by Michael BroadDecember 10, 2019

The policy of conservation officerso in the area of Penticton1, British Columbia, Canada, is to shoot dead a cougar (even a young one2) if it mauls someone’s dog and kills a cat. Conservation officers do this because it indicates a … Continue reading →

Why is the eastern puma extinct?

PoC avatarPosted on May 8, 2019 by Michael BroadMay 8, 2019

The eastern puma is extinct because they were extirpated from the eastern United States by the late 1890s. In other words they were eradicated or completely destroyed through hunting and trapping in that part of the United States of America. … Continue reading →

Do pumas eat penguins?

PoC avatarPosted on April 6, 2018 by Michael BroadDecember 15, 2018

Do pumas eat penguins? Although I can’t find any hard scientific evidence that penguins are a prey item to the puma, it seems that their distributions overlap (just) in Peru and Chile and if so pumas might eat penguins. It depends if the puma range extends to the sea shore. I doubt that it does because pumas like tree cover.
